ABSTRACT

Before going further with the displacement of concepts, I will try to relate it to 'analogy' and 'metaphor'—terms which might well have been used in place of it. However, 'analogy' and 'metaphor' are old terms and have a wide variety of partly related and partly incompatible meanings, so that their use now is apt to be confusing. In this chapter some of their meanings will be sorted out, related to the displacement of concepts, and selected for use in this book.
