ABSTRACT
This pamphlet examines the contribution of Peter I (1682–1725) to the development of Russia. It considers the relationship between the man and the environment in which he lived – and the extent to which each of these influenced the other. Because of the sheer power of his personality, Peter has been the subject of numerous studies and it would be as well at the outset to establish the basic approach to be taken here.
