The prime need of man to avert social chaos and utter destruction, continually rose to thwart each attempt to establish the ideals. The rival claims of Necessity and Free Will give an appearance of double dealing to the actions of all who have been pushed off the middle path of use and wont. In the mind of Cromwell we see this constant war between Need and Principle, but it raged in every town and village of the island that he held coerced. Poor lazy custom seemed trampled dead in the dust of that fierce strife.
