ABSTRACT

Although the experiences in the taxi-dance hall tend to mold the taxi-dancer into a type—“chic,” “peppy,” impersonal and somewhat disillusioned, with her own code of morals—what the taxi-dancer is can in part be explained also by her experiences before entering the dance hall. We may well ask who these young girls are who, out of the many different occupational opportunities of the city, choose to earn their living by dancing with all comers at a nickel a dance.
