ABSTRACT

The most popular Utopia of the period of the Bourbon Restoration is Cabet's “Voyage to Icarie,” which is mainly a continuation of the ideas contained in Morelly's socialistic schemes. Cabet introduces efficiency and improvement in methods of labor, which is a dominating ideal during much of the nineteenth century. The material conditions of life are greatly improved, but Icarie contains no essentially new element. The title page of the “Voyage to Icarie,” which outlines the social philosophy of the author, is reproduced below.
