ABSTRACT

In what follows I will explicate the notion of rationality, its ontological and methodological nature from the viewpoint of the cognitive study of religion. My cognitivist framework is rooted in philosophy: Daniel C. Dennett’s theory of intentional systems (Dennett 1987); in cultural anthropology: Robin Horton’s intellectualist anthropology (Horton 1970, 1982) and cognitive anthropology (Dougherty 1985, Holland and Quinn 1987). I will also make some strategic references to two classics of comparative religion, William James and Émile Durkheim.
