ABSTRACT
One of Roland Barthes’s projects was the reading of the sign systems of everyday life. We’ve just worked through his reading of a then-current everyday sign system, the Romans in Film. Communication Studies needs to maintain a definition of text which is as big as the world itself, if not beyond. In this sense a text is that which consciously presents itself as meaningful, it is a discrete collection (and selection) of signs.
