ABSTRACT

Proof of the performance of the self is easy to find. We renew our acquaintance with the divided self every time we look in the mirror or see our reflection in a shop window. This is the experience of being both knowing and known, seeing and seen. It is this duality that allows for discussions about identity and the extent to which that which we call our self (or selves) is given or negotiated. This again is partly about how we present ourselves, which selections we make, and how we want to be understood.
