If Colin Cherry (Extract 85 in this book) is right and ‘communication is a social affair’ then it will be as well to look at in some detail interpersonal interactions between individuals in a social context. Richard Dimbleby and Graeme Burton provide an excellent starting point for this enterprise in the section headed ‘What is Social Interaction?’ from their standard Communication Studies text Between Ourselves.
