ABSTRACT

Any part of a book which assumes to advise its readers about effective communication must begin with a singular message: be sensitive at all times to the needs of your audience. Of course being specific about precisely what we mean by this can be a little more difficult. However, it is important to realise that a fundamental weakness in communicating with other people can be our failure to empathise or to put ourselves into the position of the recipient(s) of our message. If we endeavour to make this imaginative leap then we are much more likely to communicate effectively than if we simply assume the recipient will understand.
