George Orwell was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. In addition to such novels as 1984, he was also a prolific essayist and writer of social commentary. Despite his privileged background Orwell was a champion of the working classes and wrote extensively of working-class life in such places as the Lancashire coalfields.
