ABSTRACT

Orwell first published his essay in 1946, so one possibility is that his advice may have been heeded and things may have changed. A visit to the Plain English Campaign’s website reveals that this is not so. The campaign showcases some examples of clear, unambiguous writing which Orwell would no doubt approve. There are, however, many examples on the site of confused and ineffective writing. Here are some examples. Each has a ‘before’, the original poorly written contorted prose and an ‘after’, a clear and direct translation.
