ABSTRACT

In 1962 Williams published what turned out for this subject to be a genuinely groundbreaking book as part of the series ‘Britain in the Sixties’. He called this book simply Communications. Of course the roots of Communication Studies go back much further than that, some would argue as far as the most basic enquiries of the earliest philosophers. Williams is aware of this longer road but he is also particularly concerned to register the various ways in which the first half of the twentieth century had produced ‘a dramatic tightening of interest in this world of communications’.
