ABSTRACT

A model that does partly appear to pull together insights offered by both process and semiotic approaches is that of Roman Jakobson. Jakobson, as a literary critic, was interested in the modes of communication, the different kinds of relationship which are established in the act of communication between the sender, the text, and the audience. He proposed that the six essential modes of communication could be theoretically traced to the six essential components of any communication act. Unsurprisingly these components were identified as:

addresser (sender)

addressee (receiver)
