ABSTRACT

In order to obtain a better understanding of the advantages of foreign trade in corn, it is necessary to make a few fundamental observations about trade in general, with particular reference to trade in manufactured commodities and trade in raw produce; for re-export trade, 81 which consists simply in buying in order to sell again, is conducted only by a few small states which have no means of livelihood other than to become merchants. And since this kind of foreign trade is not worth any attention in the case of a large kingdom, we shall confine ourselves to comparing the advantages of the two other branches of trade, in order to arrive at an understanding of what interests us most.
