ABSTRACT

So far, in the present volume of this study, attention has centred on those aspects of Marx's critique involving the theory of exchange value and distribution in which historical time had no analytical role. For Marx, this level of critical analysis was not an end in itself. His ultimate concern was to provide a formal critical analysis of the historical ‘motion’ of the capitalist economic system and the crisis-ridden consequences of such ‘motion’. From time to time, throughout the ‘Theories of Surplus Value’ manuscripts, then, Marx's attention shifted to the ‘dynamics’ of the capitalist mode of production that was his critical object.
