ABSTRACT

The definition of the group of offices to be discussed in this section is largely imposed by the nature of our statistical sources. As was mentioned in Chapter 2, employment in offices attached to factories is separately recorded from employment in independent offices. A City Corporation investigation of these offices revealed that there were 6,750 people employed in the former category in 1964–6 almost all of whom were within the printing and publishing industry. Chapters 8 to 10 have dealt with independent offices in banking and finance, insurance, and the main trading activities of the City. We are left with offices of industrial companies which are separate in location from their manufacturing plants. We now briefly discuss their activities.
