ABSTRACT

THE GLORIOUS MrCHINAGA.-The Fujiwara clan reached their highest glory at the time of Michinaga, but it was also about this period that their prestige began to be threatened. In 1019 Michinaga fell ill, shaved his head, and became a lay-priest and visited the Todaiji Temple with a retinue consisting of the Regent Yorimitsu and all the other Court dignitaries. The procession was almost as ostentatious as a royal one.
