ABSTRACT
The casual observer in Lugbara will see little of spirit possession in the everyday life of the people; yet it is of very considerable importance to them and in some ways central to their entire system of religion. In this paper I describe spirit possession among the Lugbara and indicate its principal significance, in both religious and political situations.
