The third day of the mortuary ceremony, the day of burial, opens with the funeral hunt (kuur mwo). This token hunt is carried out by the reciprocal funeral group of the agnates of the dead man and his mother, sometimes in consort, sometimes separately. The role of the mother's patrilineage here, as at other stages in the funeral ceremonies, is an instance of the important part played by matrilateral relationships in societies with exogamous patrilineal descent groups.
