ABSTRACT

This study has dealt with the mortuary institutions of the LoDagaa. True, there are institutions that I have not discussed, such as the Bagre society, which offers its initiates victory over death and then dashes these hopes to the ground. But I have covered the main areas of social life concerned with man's mortality—the funeral ceremonies, the system of inheritance, and the cluster of beliefs and practices that the people use to dismiss and enshrine their dead, and in particular their departed kin.
