It may well be that this is not a policy against tribalism so much as a policy of general political security prompted by the needs of the central Government to unite the country.
At the same time the country’s rulers sometimes talk about the pre-European tribal past, idealizing it as a time of perfect democracy in which everyone helped everyone else, in order to ground the evolving African socialism of today on this old tribal heritage.
