ABSTRACT

SINCE Lagos was originally a Yoruba town, the way of life of its longest-settled quarters derives from Yoruba traditions. In the old established neighbourhood at the Western end of Lagos Island, over 90% of the people are Yoruba. Eastwards across the island, the proportion of Yoruba drops to 76%, while at Ikoyi it is only 30 In the same way, as the suburbs spread outwards over the mainland, the population becomes more mixed. The proportion of residents born in the township falls, and the number of Yoruba declines from 83 %
