ABSTRACT

This concludes the Yirrkalla version of the Djanggawul epic. It differs from other cycles in the abruptness of its ending, which fails to draw all the associated threads together in relation to the common theme. The reason put forward for this is that the story is only half completed: the Milingimbi version picks up the threads and carries them on, bringing the adventures of the Djanggawul to a more or less gradual conclusion. Here, however, for reasons mentioned in the Foreword, the Milingimbi version cannot be presented. It requires detailed treatment in a separate volume, for it not only continues on from this juncture, but also repeats the whole epic from the local point of view, revealing many other aspects not brought forward here.
