ABSTRACT
The thesis of this chapter has already been stated. Anthropology is a science in so far as it explains; and, unlike the historian, who explains a given event as the particular consequent of a particular antecedent, the anthropologist attempts to model his explanation on the natural sciences, that is, he attempts to subsume particular facts or events under general rules or laws.
