ABSTRACT

The villagers have a ‘household economy’ in that the production, distribution and consumption functions primarily are focused upon and occur within the household group. In times past the economy was based almost entirely on subsistence, slash-and-burn, farming, but within the last ten years the people have moved toward a mixed system of subsistence and market production. I consider in this chapter the broad outlines of the economic system to show its relation to household organization and the rest of the social life, to show in what way the campesinos are tied economically to the larger society, and to indicate some of the transitions which currently are taking place. 1
