ABSTRACT

According to an official census taken in May 1952, the population of Hanuabada and Elevala combined was then 2489. 26 My own group of 159 households of Hohodae and Poreporena contained a population of 1121, or 1142 including incompletelyabsorbed immigrants—that is just under half the total for the villagecluster and as far as I can tell almost complete for the two villages studied. 27 The group does not include one household containing two European males with Papuan, Cinghalese, and half-caste relatives, or another containing people of mixed Papuan-Indian blood, no members of which take part in village affairs. It does, however, include two families whose heads are half-caste Europeans, but who take part in Motu activities, accept village responsibilities, and are almost completely identified with the villagers.
