ABSTRACT
Traditionally, anthropologists and archaeologists have often studied the material culture of a people. These are the most immediately observable aspects of culture, most readily studied outside the context of social communication. Archaeological remains and their dating, the material equipment of a people before any contact with the western world, and the substitution of imported objects for native manufactures, are all observable and measurable features. The elements of material culture can be counted and classified.
