ABSTRACT

Nescience, science, and psychoanalysis In an ingenious study,! Geza R6heim has endeavoured to show that the so-called nescience or ignorance of the relationship between coitus and childbirth exhibited by such native Australian tribes as the Arunta (Aranda) and their neighbours is not due to any failure in their sciential processes, but to a process of repression whereby knowledge of this relationship previously conscious is rendered unconscious, and is in consciousness replaced by a symbolic superstructure.
