ABSTRACT

Decadence in India LIKE the archaic art of Greece, and the work of the mediaeval primitives, the Indian art of the era before Christ is distinguished by good and leisurely craftsmanship but faulty technique. It has not yet mastered its materials, its ambitions are not high, and i t is easily contented. It is interested in things and not ideas, and loves to tell a story. The gates of Sanchi, one of which has been copied for the Indian section of the Victoria and Albert Museum, are covered with Buddhist legends simply told. So are the somewhat later monuments a t Amaravati, the spoils of which adorn the staircase of the British Museum.
