The first two issues of the Review of Economic Studies contained a series of notes on the concept of the elasticity of substitution by Paul Sweezy, Abba Lerner, Richard Kahn, J. R. Hicks, Lorie Tarshis and James Meade. Meade’s two contributions, reprinted below, appeared as notes III and IV in the second issue (Review of Economic Studies, vol. 1, 1933–34, pp. 149–153).
