ABSTRACT

Meade's inaugural lecture as Professor of Commerce with special reference to International Trade at the London School of Economics on 16 February 1948 was published in Economica, vol. 15 (May 1948), pp. 101–15. Meade pointed out that it was his ‘intention to treat the subject of this lecture, and in particular the relationship between internal policy and the balance of payments, rather more fully’ in his book Planning and the Price Mechanism (London: Allen & Unwin, 1948). A revised version of the lecture was published in the book (as Chapter V), as was the article on ‘Bretton Woods, Havana and the United Kingdom Balance of Payments’ (as an appendix), which is reproduced as Chapter 6 .
