ABSTRACT

During the year 1949, the new Government was preoccupied with taking over the reins of power and consolidating its rule. The decisive battle of Hsuchow in North Kiangsu had been fought in November 1948. Peking and Tientsin were taken over at the end of January and the beginning of February and Nanking and Shanghai in April and May, but it was not until the end of the year that stable government was established in the Southeast and Southwest. The People's Government was formally instituted on an all-China basis on October 1, 1949.
