ABSTRACT

Industry, in contemporary Chinese parlance, includes not only manufacturing, but also handicraft production, mining, the generation and supply of electric power and other public utilities (water and gas, but not transport). Handicrafts, mining and electric power are considered separately in this study on account of their special features. However, what is said in this chapter on the general organization of industry and of industrial enterprises applies also to mining and power; handicrafts are in a different category because of the small size of production units and their status as, for the most part, collective, not state-owned, undertakings.
