ABSTRACT

Looking back at relations between the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communists since 1921 there is plenty of evidence of Iack of common interests. In perspective it is the Sino-Soviet alliance in the period 1950 to I 957 which requires explanation, rather than the rift which became increasingly apparent after 1957. But to pose either question in isolation would be inadequate. Factors of geography, power and ideology combine to give Soviet-Chinese relations their special characteristics. Moreover the relationship must always be seen in its world context and in terms of United States policy.
