ABSTRACT
We have come a long way. It has led us through periods and associations hitherto seldom explored. The economic historian, in Germany at least, has preferred to study the systems, laws and institutions of the economy; the taxonomist has been content with structures and data, hardly reaching back beyond the nineteenth century, viewing what lay further in the past as arcane knowledge.
