ABSTRACT

BY 480 B.C. the delicate network of trade with the northeast finally collapsed, as Persian forces moved across the Hellespont and down into the Greek peninsula, mopping up as they went. At the same time the fleets of the Persian empire swept the Aegean, keeping closely in touch with the land arm. By the early autumn Attica itself was occupied, and the Peisistratids, with their followers from exile, were ceremoniously repatriated by the occupying Persians: thus, after an exile lasting thirty years, and for a very brief space, the Tyranny was restored at Athens.
