ABSTRACT
The global acceleration in inflation in the early 1970s sparked a heated controversy over its fundamental causes. 1 The controversy will be reviewed in this chapter. At the same time, an attempt will be made to indicate the mechanisms by which external influences impinge on domestic inflation. Chapters 16 and 17 then examine the empirical evidence bearing on some of these controversies.
