ABSTRACT
As well as classifying his data in the manner described in the last chapter, the historian must learn to arrange his data to suit the requirements of quantitative analysis. Different statistical methods require that data should be arranged in different ways, but there are some general principles, and a general vocabulary, which can be laid down. They are designed to secure clarity and consistency, to save time and effort, and to avoid the possibility of confusion in later stages of analysis.
