ABSTRACT

We have data on 126 industrial enterprises in the workers’ settlements. These enterprises, which employ 5,000 men and women, have a total annual output of IL. 70 million. In addition there are a large number of workshops with about 6,000 workers which have an output exceeding IL. 25 million. The main branches of industry are timber (employing 30 per cent of all workers), metal and electrical goods (about one-fourth), and food (about one-fifth). These are followed, in order of importance, by cement, glass, ceramics, quarries, chemicals, printing, leather, rubber and plastics and textiles.
