ABSTRACT
Of the old-established London trades, none has been so richly documented from its very origin as printing. It is, therefore, possible in this chapter, unlike the previous chapters, to study in some detail the evolution of a distinctly metropolitan trade in the centuries before the relatively recent period since 1861. In this way we may perhaps gain an insight into the way in which such an industry has grown up in response to the market forces of a capital city.
