ABSTRACT
IN 1879 Hans Renold, having bought the small Slater textile chain-making business, began to make three kinds of chain for the textile industry, very soon extending his activities into the cycle chain field by means of his invention of the bush-roller chain in 1880. This chain, in effect, was the foundation of Hans Renold Limited. With it, the world received an invention that, in the words of R. O. Herford, ‘ opened up a vista of apparently inexhaustible new possibilities in the field of power transmission ’.
