Factory Life and People

As the factories multiplied, at first along the banks of streams and rivers and then, with the adoption of steam power, in populous towns, they called into being a new class of human society. It was in the towns of the industrial belt that stretched from Lancashire into Yorkshire, in the Scottish lowlands and in the valleys of South Wales, that the British proletariat was born.
