ABSTRACT
Early American economic life can be understood only when considered as a frontier of the contemporary European economy. The exploration and colonization of America were natural results of the expansion of western Europe in the late Middle Ages, and colonial ventures in the New World were first of all directed to the fulfillment of the needs of the mother countries.
