ABSTRACT
During the period 1789 to 1860, agriculture continued to be the most important economic activity of the American people. Agricultural productivity greatly increased, and the area of cultivation was extended into the fertile Mississippi Valley. In these years there were many technical improvements and advances in scientific farming. The development of transportation facilities aided marketing and permitted agricultural specialization.
