‘Some industries take a relentless hold on all who work in them. They may demand much in courage, skill and team-work. The reasons may be practical, historical or emotional—yet the men become the servants of the machines. The grip may be broken by depression or distress, and the stronger would be the aftermath. Or the hold may grow tighter and tighter, till the victory of the machine is complete, and the individual crushed in the battle.’ 1
