ABSTRACT

I consider M. Ripois (1954) a very important film (even the most impor tant of all Rene Clement’s films). It is wonderful in many respects, but it is not the masterpiece that some people would like to see in it. My major criticism is that it is too intellectual and calculated a creation and there fore insufficiently suffused with sensibility. I mean by that the filmmaker’s sensibility, that of the protagonist being a completely different matter which will also command my attention.
