ABSTRACT

Her petite frame, tiny hands, and luminous brown eyes make this lovely high school senior appear delicate and vulnerable. That, however, is an erroneous first impression, for Aida is extremely strong and single-minded in her determination to study and make something of herself, come what may. This unusually articulate young woman offers us a student’s perspective on secondary education today, on how she and her peers feel about the revolution, and on the values, goals and leisure activities of middle-class youth in Nicaragua. Ms. Gutiérrez’s seriousness about the importance of learning and career preparation inform her remarkably coherent and mature testimony.
