Also fairly widespread are groups that protect historical monuments and the environment. The most well-known of these groups is the Moscow Pamyat (Memory), whose open anti-Semitism and extreme Russian chauvinism, although criticized from time to time by the Soviet press, have so far not led to any administrative, much less judicial, measures against its members. In addition, like mushrooms after rain, thousands of diverse amateur clubs have appeared; in Moscow alone there are nearly 700.
