The Beginnings of Civil Society: The Independent Peace Movement and the Danube Movement in Hungary

At the time of this account, the spring of 1988, Hungarian society is showing signs of increased political activity. A short description of the current situation should clarify the paradoxical relationship of the previous decade's limited movements to politics and the main characteristic of the evolving civil society-that is, political activity free from the dictates of the party.
